What does home mean to you?

From film festivals to football tournaments, comedy nights to carnivals, exhibitions, workshops, parties and much, much more, Refugee Week Scotland (15-21 June 2009) is an exciting programme of events happening across the country to celebrate diversity and raise awareness of refugee issues.

This year the theme of Refugee Week is HOME. For many refugees and asylum seekers, a new home in Scotland means safety from persecution and a life without fear. But what does home mean to you?

For me home is…

bed

Sleeping in my own bed.

There’s nothing quite like it. My bed knows me and loves me and on cold winter nights it gives me a hug. It’s very big, as you can see, and when I’m curled up under the covers I feel small and safe and incredibly cosy. I suppose you could say it’s womb-like (but I’d rather you didn’t.)

a nice cup of tea

A nice cup of tea.

I’m not sure what magical properties it has, but there’s something so very comforting and familiar about tea. It seems to bring a little bit of home to you wherever you are in the world. I’m a little bit embarrassed to be so British, but I always carry a couple of teabags in my handbag when I travel because, upon arrival, the first thing I always want to do – before I unpack and before I explore – is have a nice cup of tea (and hopefully a biscuit.)

bertie wooster

Someone who is always pleased to see me.

Of course, being a cat he doesn’t necessarily look pleased to see me, but I’m sure he’s purring on the inside. When I get home, he’s usually waiting at the door for me and quite often he’ll give me a little miaowing lecture about where I’ve been and what time do I call this. But then he softens up for cuddles and turns into a happy little licking ball of furry love. And that’s what’s most important about home to me – loving and being loved.

Your turn. What does home mean to you?

Please include the first two paragraphs and link to Refugee Week Scotland 09 in your post.

And don’t forget to tell them what home means to you and add your photos to the Flickr pool.

Now over to you!

  1. I am jealous of your quilt and teacup. x

    • That quilt was given to me by my mother’s cousin’s cousin when I moved into this place/she moved into a smaller place. It is the most snuggly cocoon to wrap up in when I have a cold. (She also gave me a glass fruitbowl in the shape of a dove. It does not make me think of home.)

  2. I like your quilt and your cat :)

  3. Arwwwwwwwww, that all looks adorable!

  11. Thank you for visiting me at Coastcard. I LOVE your cat photo!

    • He’s looking very at home there, isn’t he? Actually we’d been away for the weekend and I took this shortly after we got back. He was sooo sleepy; as much as he likes visiting other cats, I think he can only really relax in his house. (And it is HIS house.)
